
Kinshasa , August 11, 2026 (TOP243NEWS).- President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, officially launched on Tuesday the construction of the new Dr Étienne Tshisekedi wa Mulumba Boulevard in Kinshasa, as part of efforts to modernize the capital’s road infrastructure.
Stretching 2,020 metres, the new road will extend Triomphal Boulevard to Bakayawu Square in the municipality of Bandalungwa, passing notably through the Lieutenant-Colonel Kokolo military camp.
The project includes eight traffic lanes, landscaped sidewalks, a modern stormwater drainage system, public lighting, comprehensive road signage and green spaces.
According to Kinshasa Governor Daniel Bumba, the infrastructure is expected to improve traffic flow in this part of the capital while facilitating the movement of people and goods.
«“This road represents an investment in the future. It will reduce traffic congestion, facilitate the movement of people and goods, improve access to several neighbourhoods and boost economic activity,” the governor said.»
The boulevard is named after Dr Étienne Tshisekedi wa Mulumba, a historic figure of the Congolese opposition and father of the current head of state, in recognition of his political career and his role in the struggle for democratization in the DRC.
The construction work will be carried out by Chinese company CR20, which has pledged to comply with quality and safety standards as well as the project’s implementation schedule. The stated objective is to open the road to traffic within 12 months.
CR20 Chief Executive Officer Guo Zhuwei said local authorities and neighbouring communities would be involved in the implementation of the project. The approach is expected to help create jobs and support vocational training programmes for local residents.
Through the project, Congolese authorities aim to strengthen Kinshasa’s road network and support the urban growth of a capital that has faced major congestion and mobility challenges for several years.
