Kolwezi , June 26, 2026 (TOP243NEWS) – Under the leadership of Lualaba Governor Fifi Masuka Saini, the Provincial Department of Sanitation and Manual Road Maintenance officially launched the Workshop of Key Stakeholders on Waste Management and Recycling, an initiative bringing together public authorities, mining companies, private sector representatives, technical and financial partners, researchers, and investors around a shared objective: building a modern and sustainable waste management system in the province.
In her opening address, Governor Fifi Masuka first gave thanks to God before expressing, on behalf of the people of Lualaba, her gratitude to the President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, whose vision of a more resilient nation committed to sustainable development continues to inspire provincial efforts to protect the environment.
The governor stressed that the workshop responds to an urgent environmental, public health, and social challenge as Lualaba experiences rapid urbanization and sustained economic growth. While this development represents a major opportunity for the province, it has also led to a significant increase in waste generation, making innovative and locally adapted solutions essential.
Fifi Masuka emphasized the need to change the way waste is perceived, arguing that it should no longer be viewed as a burden but rather as a valuable economic resource. Around the world, she noted, waste is increasingly being transformed into energy, construction materials, and fuel, while also creating jobs and generating new economic opportunities.
« Lualaba, the leading mining province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, cannot afford to remain on the sidelines of this transformation. We must develop solutions tailored to the realities of our province, » she said.
To achieve this objective, the governor explained that the workshop aims to bring together expertise, encourage the exchange of best practices, and strengthen partnerships among public institutions, private companies, researchers, and investors in order to establish an efficient and sustainable waste management and recycling industry.
In her concluding remarks, Fifi Masuka called for collective responsibility, emphasizing that environmental protection is everyone’s duty. According to her, every citizen has an essential role to play in building a cleaner, more sustainable Lualaba that is firmly committed to a green economy.
